As part of the Boy Scouts of America’s 100th Anniversary, Gamehaven Scouts are invited to participate in a historic broadcast of the Centennial Celebration Show from the 2010 National Scout Jamboree, an event at Fort A. P. Hill, Virginia, that attracts more than 40,000 Scouts and Scouting volunteers from across the country.

The event marks the first time in BSA history that the entire Scouting community—past, present, and future—will have the opportunity to join together to experience an inspirational and interactive jamboree arena show, which will be broadcast via satellite to select locations nationwide and Webcast worldwide via www.ustream.tv/shininglight.

The “Shining Light” event will take place on Saturday, July 31, 2010, from 7:00 p.m. EST to 9:30 p.m. EST. A Shining Light Across America is truly a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Scouting friends and family, and the entire Gamehaven community, to come together in celebration of Scouting, its rich heritage, exciting present, and bright future. Hundreds of “Shining Light” events will take place across the country in venues large and small on July 31 as part of the organization’s historic nationwide broadcast of the Centennial Celebration Show, which will be performed live in front of an estimated 60,000 Scouts, Scouters, and visitors at the 2010 National Scout Jamboree at Fort A. P. Hill, Virginia.

A Shining Light Across America” is one of eight major engagement programs the Boy Scouts of America is undertaking as part of its 100th Anniversary Celebration. For a century, the organization has brought families and communities together to prepare America’s youth to live, work, and play with character and integrity. The unique 100-year activities, activated at the local level, aim to drive engagement, recruit new members and volunteers, and enhance the awareness of the value of Scouting in an inspiring, purpose-driven celebration.

2010 Summer Parades in Rochester

Dear Scout Leaders,

As part of the 100 year celebration of Scouting- this summer the 100 year Scouting committee is encouraging all youth and adult Scouts to march in one of 2 parades to help promote Scouting in the Rochester area.

Rochesterfest Parade: Friday, June 25 @ 5 p.m.

Any Troop or Pack that is planning to walk in the parade, please contact KC Reed. We would like to have the Scouts there by 5 PM and they should be done by 7 PM. All units can bring their Troop, Pack and American flags to the parade and carry them in a group. Meeting point will be near the floats that are staged north of the railroad tracks on West Silver Lake Dr, next to the power plant. The Rochester-fest parade committee will have all the Scouts walking in the parade near the front parade because of Pack 121 carrying the large Perkins American flag.

Scouts Needed: The committee is also seeking to have six pairs of boys (preferably Boy Scouts) to carry banners for various floats through-out the Rochester-fest parade, please contact KC Reed if you are interested in doing that service for the Rochesterfest parade.

Gamehaven Council 100 hours of Service
The 100 Hours of Service for 100 Years of Scouting campaign is well under way. Please make sure your unit is recording their service hours. To record hours go to http://tinyurl.com/100servicetracking

Each unit completing a 100 hours of service will be eligible to purchase a ribbon for their unit flag. The three units leading the council as of April 25 are:
1. Sugar Loaf Troop 57 with 45 hours of service
2. Hiawatha Troop 21 with 42 hours of service
3. Hiawatha Troop 102 with 30 hours of service

100th Anniversary Council Shoulder Patch
The design will depict the historical record of Gamehaven Council's Boy Scout camps. Do you remember the logo for Hok-si-la? Crow Wing? Kamp Kahler? Queen's Bluff? Gamehaven Scout Reservation? They will all be there. The design will be shown on the 100th Anniversary website soon!

The patches will be available from the Council Scout Shop this summer and you will be able to buy as many as you want or need. This is an official shoulder patch, so it can be worn on the uniform or kept for a collection or trading.

100TH Anniversary Parades
We know there are several people planning for your local parades, don’t keep it a secret! Email us and we will help you advertise it on our 100th anniversary website! There will be banners available for parades that can be reserved through the council office.

We will have a parade unit in the Rochesterfest parade on June 25th, and in the Blooming Prairie 4th of July parade. We would like everyone to join us in uniform and be a part of the 100th anniversary celebration.

“A Shining Light Across America” for Districts and Units

There couldn’t be a more awe-inspiring way to celebrate our Scouting story than “A Shining Light Across America.” For the first time in BSA history, the BSA will transmit the Centennial Celebration Show from the National Scout Jamboree to a worldwide audience, using both Webcast and satellite broadcast technologies, on Saturday, July 31, at 7 p.m. CST.

Please mark your unit calendars for this occasion. The location of the “Shining Light Across America” event in Gamehaven Council will be announced in May.

The 100 Hours of Service for 100 Years of Scouting committee would like to update you on the 100 hours of service project.

Please make sure your unit has registered for the 100 Hours of Service. You can either do this online at http://tinyurl.com//100servicetracking or you can fill out a paper form at Roundtable and return it. We will register you and all you will have to do is update us on your hours. Once your unit reaches 100 hours of service, they will qualify for a ribbon to hang on your unit flag. (Remember you get one hour for each scout participating. For example 10 scouts working for 1 hour = 10 hours of service.) 100th Anniversary Forest
Thanks to all your generous donations there will be a forest to plant at Gamehaven Scout Reservation.
On Saturday May 1st we will be planting over 100 trees. Whether you purchased a tree or not, please come and join us in the memorable event.
There is still time to order you’re tree through the Generation Connections program. Look on the 100th anniversary fun page at Gamehavenbsa.org for more info. You can keep the second tree for yourself or send it to GSR to add to the forest.

100TH Anniversary Parades

A Year of Celebration A Century of Making a Difference
We want every Scout, adult leader, and Scouting alum to have the chance to be part of our biggest milestone yet—our 1OOth Anniversary Celebration. We want to fire up the passion for Scouting while giving everyone an opportunity to make a difference—and earn recognition. Individuals can earn awards by demonstrating dedication to five of Scouting’s core values—Leadership, Achievement, Community Service, Character, and the Outdoors. Participants can earn one award in each category. A Year of Celebration will be in effect from Sept. 1, 2009, through Dec. 31, 2010. Go to the scout shop to purchase the starter patch. You do not need to complete any requirements to obtain the starter patch. Then work on the requirements and earn your ribbons. Marlowe has plenty in stock at the scout shop.

Adventure Base 100

Gamehaven Council is looking at chartering a bus to go to Adventure Base 100 at Cedar Rapids, IA. We will be leaving on June 19 from GSR at 7:00 AM and we will arrive in Cedar Rapids at about 10:00 AM. We will spend about 5 hours at Cedar Rapids, IA. We will be leaving from Cedar Rapids at 3:00 PM and we will arrive at GSR about 6:00 PM. Cost is $25 per person. We need at Minimum of 40 people to able to go. On February 8, 2010, the Boy Scouts of America will be 100 years old. In celebration of the occasion they invite you to join them in saving lives through the “A Scout is Helpful. 100 donors for 100 years of service” blood drive. Mayo Clinic Blood Donor Center and The Gamehaven Council of the Boy Scouts of America are offering scouts age 16 and up, adult leaders, and everyone who supports the Boy Scouts the opportunity to help save a life! Every six minutes, someone at the Mayo Clinic receives a transfusion of blood. As each whole blood donation can be divided into three blood products, someone donating a single unit of whole blood can impact the lives of up to three people!

From February 8th (the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America) through March 31st we are asking all eligible scouts, leaders, and others who support Scouting to participate in the “A Scout is Helpful. 100 donors for 100 years of service” blood drive. During these two months, we encourage you to donate at Mayo Clinic Blood Donor Center in the Hilton Building. Please contact the Mayo Clinic Blood Donor Center to make an appointment

On March 11 the Mayo Clinic Blood Donor Center will be open late. On this date, Scouts who are interested in learning more and/or working on the Medicine Merit badge may come for a tour. Donating and arranging for others to donate will count toward requirement 10 of the Medicine Merit Badge. We would like scouts and leaders interested in the tour to schedule appointments between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM to donate. Please show up at your appointment in your class A uniform. Dr. Jeff Winters, a leader from Troop 21, a blood donor, and a physician in the Division of Transfusion Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, will take those Scouts in uniform on a tour and talk about the importance of blood donation.

For the remainder of the month, when you donate please be sure to sign in on the tally sheet at the front desk so we can track our goal of 100 donors! Help Save a Life!

How do I schedule an appointment?
Call 507-284-4475 during the hours of operation listed above.

Who can donate?
Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old or 16 years old with written parental consent. During your donation appointment, you will complete a brief health questionnaire to make sure blood donation is safe for you and the recipient of your blood.

How long does it take to donate?
Whole blood donation, from check-in to refreshments, takes 45 to 60 minutes.

What should I do before I donate?
Before donating, you should eat a good meal and drink plenty of fluids.

Does donating blood count as a service time toward rank advancement?
Speak with your scoutmaster for approval but this does represent service to your community and should count as one hour of service.

Would donating blood count toward requirement 10 of the Medicine Merit Badge?
Helping with a blood drive should count. This should include recruiting others to donate. Check with your merit badge counselor. For the Medicine Merit Badge being offered on March 20 at the Merit Badge Fair, helping to recruit others to donate and showing up for the tour on March 11 will fulfill requirement 10. Speak with Dr. Winters on March 11 if you are taking the Medicine Merit Badge on the 20th.

National Hall of Leadership

The deadline for the National Hall of Leadership has been extended to April 2, 2010. We are looking for your submission. Don't miss this one-time opportunity to recognize outstanding leadership by a Scout, registered Scout leader, or Scouting volunteer who made a significant difference in the life of another by the extraordinary service they have given and the Scouting virtues they have modeled. You know someone or may be two or three persons that inspire you or others,or has made a difference in the lives of others. Just submit the nominee name and tell us your story.

100 hours of Service
The 100 Hours of Service for 100 Years of Scouting committee would like to update you on the 100 hours of service project. As you know, our big kickoff event was Friday Feb 6th. We completed 3 quilts for the Women's Shelter.
We also decided we would like to track what each of the units is doing. We set up two websites to track this. The first website was for each unit to log in and report what service they were doing during this big kickoff week. That URL is http://tinyurl.com/100servicekickoff. The second site is to track all the service done by each unit through out the year. That URL is http://tinyurl.com/100servicetracking. Please make sure these are attached to the Gamehaven website. As units reach their goal, they will qualify to purchase a ribbon to hang on their flag.

The Boy Scouts of America Centennial Silver Dollar
The weaving of thoughts, cultures, and ideas into one American fabric is stamped into our national identity - E Pluribus Unum, "Out of Many, One."
In 2010, the United States Mint will produce a new commemorative coin that honors the centennial of the Boy Scouts of America. Beginning March 23, the United States Mint will make available for sale 350,000 high quality, modern issue, commemorative silver dollar coins.
Like the inscription on the coin, the BSA gathers together youth from all backgrounds. So, it is fitting that the surcharges from the sale of each coin are authorized for use to benefit the BSA National Foundation in its efforts to bring Scouting to underserved communities. Surcharges for the coin sales may generate up to $3.5 million for this very worthy cause. For the first thirty days the proof coin will be offered at $39.95 and the uncirculated coin will be offered at $33.95, after which the prices will be $43.95 and $35.95, respectively. Judge William S. Sessions, former Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Distinguished Eagle Scout, is the Honorary Chairman of the BSA's initiative to promote the Boy Scouts of America Centennial Silver Dollar. Judge Sessions' son Congressman Pete Sessions of Dallas, Texas, also a Distinguished Eagle Scout, introduced and championed the legislation that authorized the BSA to be one of the two commemorative coins produced by the United States Mint in 2010.

LEADERSHIP
Scouting has a proud tradition of producing great leaders. Self-determination, teamwork, and preparedness are synonymous with Scouts everywhere. For Scouting’s 1OOth Anniversary, let’s celebrate this tradition of developing youth leaders. The Year of Celebration Leadership Award encourages Scouts to explore and reflect upon the qualities of a good leader. The award recipients will work on leadership skills. The Leadership Award rewards participants for reflecting upon and sharing leadership lessons and skills. Scouts earning this award will look to role models, lead groups, and participate in leadership-building activities. Adults and alumni will build their unit leadership skills by emphasizing membership growth, volunteering, and providing role models.

Complete three of the five requirements in each category to earn that award.

Cub Scouts
1. Explain what makes a good leader and give an example of a Scout (past or present) demonstrating those qualities. Ask your parent or den leader what makes a good leader. 2. Practice being a leader such as being a denner for one week. Write or tell your parent or den leader about what you did during that week. 3. Get a friend to join Cub Scouts. 4. Organize the den to set up and take down chairs at the pack meeting. 5. With the approval of your den leader, plan and lead a den activity.
Boy Scouts
1. Identify someone from your Scouting experience you think is a good leader. Ask them what makes them an effective leader and then talk to your parent or Scoutmaster about what makes a good leader. Write 200 words on the leader you chose and share with your troop leader. 2. Teach a Scout a rank requirement and help them to a successful completion. 3. Serve in a troop or team leadership position for three months . 4. Serve as a youth staff member for a unit, district, or council event or camp. 5. Serve as a den chief for a Cub Scout or Webelos den for three months.
Venturers
1. While serving in a crew leadership role, plan a crew activity that celebrates the BSA 1OOth Anniversary. 2. Help organize, teach, and run a Quest sports day clinic for a Cub Scout pack, Boy Scout troop, Varsity team, other crew, or other youth group. 3. Serve as a youth staff member for a unit, district, or council event or camp. 4. Serve on any of your council’s Leadership Training courses. 5. Think of someone from your Scouting experience who deserves recognition for their leadership. Write 200 words on the leader you chose and share with your crew leader.
Adult Leaders
1. Help organize a new unit. 2. Compile a list of all adult and/or alumni e-mail addresses in your unit, get their permission, and submit the list to your local council Scout service center so Scouting communication can be improved. 3. Actively support a unit in at least two activities related to the BSA 1OOth Anniversary. 4. Recruit a new adult volunteer, or find a Scouting alumnus, who registers with the BSA. 5. Help any registered youth with their Year of Celebration Leadership award.
Alumni
1. Register with a unit as an assistant leader or other adult leader. Attend each unit meeting for at least two months. 2. Become involved with a district or council as a registered volunteer in support of Scouting. 3. Think of a Scouting leader (youth or adult) who made a positive difference in your life. Write a letter to the editor of a local publication about how that individual taught you about leadership. 4. Locate and meet with a Scout leader from a pack, troop, team, crew, district, or council. Let them know that you are working on this award. Ask what being a Scout leader means to them and share your thoughts on what you can do to support Scouting in your community. 5. Contact your local Scout service center. Arrange to make a donation to support the Scouting principle of youth leadership in your area in some way that is mutually beneficial to you and the local council.

100th Anniversary blood drive
Help save a life! Donate blood through the A Scout is Helpful Blood Drive. Gamehaven Boy Scouts join the Mayo Clinic Blood Donor Center in encouraging Scouts and Scouters to help save lives. LEADERSHIP
Scouting has a proud tradition of producing great leaders. Self-determination, teamwork, and preparedness are synonymous with Scouts everywhere. For Scouting’s 1OOth Anniversary, let’s celebrate this tradition of developing youth leaders. The Year of Celebration Leadership Award encourages Scouts to explore and reflect upon the qualities of a good leader. The award recipients will work on leadership skills. The Leadership Award rewards participants for reflecting upon and sharing leadership lessons and skills. Scouts earning this award will look to role models, lead groups, and participate in leadership-building activities. Adults and alumni will build their unit leadership skills by emphasizing membership growth, volunteering, and providing role models.

Complete three of the five requirements in each category to earn that award.

Cub Scouts
1. Explain what makes a good leader and give an example of a Scout (past or present) demonstrating those qualities. Ask your parent or den leader what makes a good leader. 2. Practice being a leader such as being a denner for one week. Write or tell your parent or den leader about what you did during that week. 3. Get a friend to join Cub Scouts. 4. Organize the den to set up and take down chairs at the pack meeting. 5. With the approval of your den leader, plan and lead a den activity.
Boy Scouts
1. Identify someone from your Scouting experience you think is a good leader. Ask them what makes them an effective leader and then talk to your parent or Scoutmaster about what makes a good leader. Write 200 words on the leader you chose and share with your troop leader. 2. Teach a Scout a rank requirement and help them to a successful completion. 3. Serve in a troop or team leadership position for three months . 4. Serve as a youth staff member for a unit, district, or council event or camp. 5. Serve as a den chief for a Cub Scout or Webelos den for three months.
Venturers
1. While serving in a crew leadership role, plan a crew activity that celebrates the BSA 1OOth Anniversary. 2. Help organize, teach, and run a Quest sports day clinic for a Cub Scout pack, Boy Scout troop, Varsity team, other crew, or other youth group. 3. Serve as a youth staff member for a unit, district, or council event or camp. 4. Serve on any of your council’s Leadership Training courses. 5. Think of someone from your Scouting experience who deserves recognition for their leadership. Write 200 words on the leader you chose and share with your crew leader.
Adult Leaders
1. Help organize a new unit. 2. Compile a list of all adult and/or alumni e-mail addresses in your unit, get their permission, and submit the list to your local council Scout service center so Scouting communication can be improved. 3. Actively support a unit in at least two activities related to the BSA 1OOth Anniversary. 4. Recruit a new adult volunteer, or find a Scouting alumnus, who registers with the BSA. 5. Help any registered youth with their Year of Celebration Leadership award.
Alumni
1. Register with a unit as an assistant leader or other adult leader. Attend each unit meeting for at least two months. 2. Become involved with a district or council as a registered volunteer in support of Scouting. 3. Think of a Scouting leader (youth or adult) who made a positive difference in your life. Write a letter to the editor of a local publication about how that individual taught you about leadership. 4. Locate and meet with a Scout leader from a pack, troop, team, crew, district, or council. Let them know that you are working on this award. Ask what being a Scout leader means to them and share your thoughts on what you can do to support Scouting in your community. 5. Contact your local Scout service center. Arrange to make a donation to support the Scouting principle of youth leadership in your area in some way that is mutually beneficial to you and the local council.

100 hours of Service
Do a good turn! Participate in Gamehaven Council’s 100 Hours of Service for the 100th anniversary. Each unit is encouraged to do at least 100 hours of service in 2010. Your unit is encouraged to kick-off their 100 hours during the week of February 7, 2010 – the week of the Boy Scouts anniversary. 100th Anniversary blood drive
Help save a life! Donate blood through the A Scout is Helpful Blood Drive. Gamehaven Boy Scouts join the Mayo Clinic Blood Donor Center in encouraging Scouts and Scouters to help save lives. People 17 and older may donate while youth 16 years old may donate with a parent’s permission. The blood drive will run during February and March. Plan your donation so you can do it during this time frame.

Help plant the Centennial Forest out at Gamehaven Council
BSA has partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to sell trees as part of the 2010 Generations Connection. For every tree that is purchased another will be planted in the Flathead National Forest (near Kalispell, MT) to restore an area damaged by fire. Two trees for the price of one! Through this program, Gamehaven Council has organized a Centennial Forest project for Gamehaven Scout Reservation (GSR). You are invited to help build our Centennial Forest by purchasing a tree. Legacy Sugar Maples will be planted at GSR. The trees will be a nice addition to the camp, and eventually, we will be able to tap the trees and make maple syrup. The new trees will be 2 to 4 feet tall and we plan to have a planting ceremony on Saturday, May 1, 2010. The Centennial Forest will be marked with a commemorative plaque recognizing the contributions of all those who purchased and planted the trees.

100 Hours of Service for 100 Years of Scouting

The 100 Hours of Service committee was delighted to complete three quilts for the Women's Shelter last week at the Rochester Scout Birthday celebration. This celebration was the kickoff for the 100 hours of Service campaign that will last through the next year. In celebration of 100 years of scouting, Gamehaven is asking each unit to complete 100 hours of service over then next year. Units that complete 100 hours of service will qualify for a ribbon to be place on their unit flag pole. Each hour of service completed per boy counts as an hour. (4 boys serving 1 hour = 4 hours). We are asking each unit to log on to http://tinyurl.com//100servicetracking to track their service hours. The units reaching 100+ hours will be noted in each newsletter.

A Year of Celebration A Century of Making a Difference
We want every Scout, adult leader, and Scouting alum to have the chance to be part of our biggest milestone yet—our 1OOth Anniversary Celebration. We want to fire up the passion for Scouting while giving everyone an opportunity to make a difference—and earn recognition. Individuals can earn awards by demonstrating dedication to five of Scouting’s core values— Leadership, Achievement, Community Service, Character, and the Outdoors. Participants can earn one award in each category.
A Year of Celebration will be in effect from Sept. 1, 2009, through Dec. 31, 2010. Gamehaven’s 100th anniversary team will be highlighting a different core value ribbon each month, starting with the outdoors ribbon. Go to the scout shop to purchase the starter patch. Nominations for BSA 100th Anniversary National Hall of Leadership.
Inductions to the Hall of Leadership will be based on stories submitted online to Gamehaven Council and reviewed by a panel of national judges. If you would like to recognize a special leader or leaders in your life you can nominate them by submitting your story of 450 words or less to www.scouting.org/100years. The nomination period is open from February 8, 2009 to February 8, 2010. Every council will have a representative in the National Hall of Leadership!

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Scouting’s contribution to society is most visible in the movement’s commitment to community service. Service is interwoven into many of Scouting’s honors and is mandatory for earning the higher rank advancements. Through service, Scouts demonstrate that they provide an essential function to their communities.

The Year of Celebration Community Service Award rewards recipients for providing time and resources at no charge for the good of their local community. More than just engage in service, the award recipient must also share their thoughts about why service is crucial to our society and how Scouts today fulfill a 100-year-old legacy of serving communities.

Over the years, the Boys Scouts of America has partnered with several national organizations to accomplish some great service projects. If you are looking for service project ideas, consider the following options:

Cub Scouts
1. With your parent or den leader, identify a person who serves the community. Write or tell about what that person does for others. 2. With your family or den, help plan and carry out a community service project. Write or tell about the project. 3. With your family and/or den, clean up your Pack’s chartering organization’s parking lot, a neighborhood park, the school grounds, or other public area. 4. Participate in a nature beautification project such as a tree or natural vegetation planting. 5. Give service to a community organization such as a food bank or feeding station.

Boy Scouts
1. Participate in Scouting for Food or another food drive by spending at least one hour placing bags, collecting bags, distributing food, or spreading the word about food collection. 2. Volunteer to plant trees or landscape an area around a church, synagogue, or other place of worship or a not-for-profit organization that is not the Boy Scouts of America. 3. Provide two hours of service in a group community service project approved by your Scout leader. 4. Recruit one new boy or adult leader into Boy Scouts or Varsity Scouts. 5. Provide two hours of volunteer service at a hospital, senior citizen or veteran’s facility, or another facility approved by your Scout leader.

Venturers
1. Participate in the Venturing National Service Project. 2. Talk to a Cub Scout den about how service benefits the community. 3. Recruit a new member to your crew or ship or assist a pack, troop, or team in its recruiting efforts. 4. Write 200 words on the value of community service. Talk to your adviser or parent about your ideas. 5. Participate in a food drive and/or help at a food bank when Scouts turn in their Scouting For Food items.

Adult Leaders
1. Be an active participant in Scouting For Food or another food drive or help with a Salvation Army service project. 2. Be an active participant in the Nothing But Nets project found on the national 1OOth Anniversary Web site.3. Be an active participant in a Take Pride in America project or a project benefiting the National Parks Stewardship Awards program. 4. Be an active participant in an American Red Cross or a Habitat for Humanity project. 5. Be an active participant in any unit’s service project.

Alumni
1. Team up with a unit to participate in at least two hours of community service. 2. Work with your local Scout service center to help it identify Scouting alumni. Become familiar with all aspects of the BSA Alumni Connection Web site and arrange to speak to at least one community group about the 1OOth Anniversary and BSA Alumni Connection. Distribute BSA Alumni reconnection cards, available at your local Scout service center. 3. Write a letter to the editor of a local newspaper or other publication. Share how Scouting influenced your understanding of service to others and commend local Scouts and leaders for the service they provide each year to the local community. 4. Encourage involvement in a local youth-led food collection drive by personally donating and providing participation information to one or more individuals. 5. Organize a community service project that benefits your community, through your employer or for any social, service, or religious group to which you may belong. Share with the members that you are a Scouting alumnus and distribute a BSA Alumni reconnection card, available at your local Scout service center.

NATIONAL HALL OF LEADERSHIP NOMINATIONS

*Gamehaven Council is looking for Nominations to the National Hall of Leadership.
*To be nominated for the National Hall of Leadership, the nominee must be a living Scout or Scouting volunteer who may/may not be officially registered with the BSA.
*They also must have served as an active Scout or Scouting volunteer within Scouting for at least one year. A nominee may be young or old-there is no age limit for nominees.
*Nominations are submitted in the form of a story that is 450 words or less, describing why the person is deserving of this one-time honor.
*The nomination period closes on February 8, 2010, the 100th Anniversary of Scouting. The final inductees to the National Hall of Leadership will total 303-one representing each BSA council and one selected by the National BSA Council-and will be announced at the BSA National Annual Meeting in Dallas in May 2010.

A Year of Celebration – A Century of Making a Difference is an awards program developed especially for the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. The program is open to all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, adult leaders, and Scouting alumni. There are five awards, each based on one of the five core values of the Boy Scouts of America: one for Leadership, Achievement, Community Service, Character and the Outdoors.

Can You Find the Hidden Treasure?

Geocaching is a sport in which everyone can use a multi-billion dollar satellite system to find a hidden “treasure” (cache). The cache contains a trinket that may be kept as a prize. In Geocaching, one uses a hand held GPS (Global Positioning System) to find a cache hidden by someone else. The GPS really does use information from satellites to tell you exactly where you are, anywhere on Earth. There are caches hidden all over the world. There are also hundreds of caches hidden in Southeastern Minnesota, and now, there are some at Gamehaven Scout Reservation. GPS devices are not only used in this fun sport, they are often used instead of a compass by many hikers. When you learn to go Geocaching, you have fun and you learn a useful outdoor survival skill.

Get in the Game geocaching is one of the 100th Anniversary of Scouting activities. In 2010, Get in the Game will have caches stashed all over the council and will create a local adventure for Scouts of all ages. In the summer of 2009, Cubs Scouts have the opportunity to learn about Geocaching out at Gamehaven Scout Reservation.
The 2009, Get in the Game event is coming up fast so don’t miss your chance for a geocaching adventure! It is a bring a friend, Cub Scout activity in which experienced geocachers can have some fun and new geocachers can learn a new sport. To participate, bring a friend that might enjoy learning about Cub Scouts. Bring your adult partner and/or your friend’s adult partner. Bring a GPS if you have one.(Some GPS’s are available for use at GSR.) You will be taught how to use a GPS unit and how to Geocache. Everyone who attends will be provided with the information needed to find several hidden caches. This activity is a blast.

Century of Values hits the Road!

The 100^th anniversary touring lodge is coming to Gamehaven Council on September 8^th. It is scheduled to arrive at between Noon and 2 pm at the Peace Plaza in downtown Rochester. This uniquely decorated RV is traveling to over 300 councils across America. The trip started in Michigan on February 8, 2009 and will end in Irving Texas on February 8^th, 2010. It will cover 45,000 miles along the journey.

The touring lodge will present each Council Scout Executive with a specially designed 24”x36” mural depicting important individuals, events, and symbols in Scouting history.

“The Century of Value visits are designed to say Thank You to local officials and volunteers for their commitment and dedication to the community’s youth while highlighting the positive impact that Scouting’s traditions have had during the past 100 years” according to Advisor Frank Millon.

For 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for millions of America’s youth. Through A Year of Celebration, A Century of Making a Difference, the BSA and Gamehaven Council will demonstrate the incredible impact of a century of living the Scout Law.

Program participants will earn recognition for making a difference in their communities due to their dedication to five of Scouting’s core values: Leadership, Character, Community Service, Achievement, and the Outdoors. Participants will be able to earn our 100th Anniversary commemorative patch.

A Year of Celebration will take place from September 1, 2009 through December 31, 2010. The program is open to all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, and Scouting alumni. Read the patch requirements to learn more by clicking on this link: A Year of Celebration program.

Additionally, the BSA has also teamed up with some great organizations to offer unique 100th Anniversary service projects that can apply towards your Year of Celebration Service award. These national opportunities will truly show what Scouts can do when they band together towards a shared goal.

For 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for America’s youth. Through A Year of Celebration, we celebrate this legacy and commit ourselves to inspire and prepare future generations.

"A Scout is Helpful!" - 100 donors for 100 years of service

This is the first characteristic of the scout law. As part of YES (Year of Extreme Service) and to celebrate 100 years of scouting service in the United States, Mayo Clinic Blood Donor Center and The Gamehaven Council of the Boy Scouts of American are offering scouts age 16 and up and all adult leaders the opportunity to help save a life! Every six minutes, someone at the Mayo Clinic receives a transfusion of blood. As each whole blood donation can be divided into three blood products, someone donating a single unit of whole blood can impact the lives of up to three people!

From March 12th through April 12th, we are asking all eligible scouts and leaders to participate in the “A Scout is Helpful. 100 donors for 100 years of service” blood drive. During this month, we would like 100 scouts and leaders to donate at Mayo Clinic Blood Donor Center in the Hilton Building. The kickoff event will be on March 12th from 4:30 PM until 7 PM. We would like scouts and leaders to schedule appointments to donate during this time and show up at their appointment in their class A uniform. Dr. Jeff Winters, a leader from Troop 21, a blood donor, and a physician in the Division of Transfusion Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, will take those boys in uniform on a tour and talk about the importance of blood donation.

For the remainder of the month, when you donate please be sure to sign in on the tally sheet at the front desk so we can track our goal of 100 donors! Help Save a Life!

How do I schedule an appointment?

Who can donate?
Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old or 16 years old with written parental consent. During your donation appointment, you will complete a brief health questionnaire to make sure blood donation is safe for you and the recipient of your blood.

How long does it take to donate?
Whole blood donation, from check-in to refreshments, takes 45 to 60 minutes.

What should I do before I donate?
Before donating, you should eat a good meal and drink plenty of fluids.

Does donating blood count as a service time toward rank advancement?
Speak with your scoutmaster for approval but this does represent service to your community and should count as one hour of service.

Would donating blood count toward requirement 10 of the Medicine Merit Badge?
Helping with a blood drive should count. This should include recruiting others to donate. Check with your merit badge counselor. For the Medicine Merit Badge being offered on March 14 at the Merit Badge Fair, helping to recruit others to donate and showing up for the kickoff on March 12 will fulfill requirement 10. Speak with Dr. Winters on March 12 if you are taking the Medicine Merit Badge on the 14t.

Celebrating 100 Years - National Hall of Leadership

The National Hall of Leadership is a one-time opportunity only during the 100th Anniversary to honor and recognize Scouts, leaders and any living person who has served as a Scouting volunteer for the extraordinary difference they have made in the lives of others through their leadership. Nominations will be in the form of stories submitted online for judging. These entries will provide councils an electronic database of stories from individuals explaining how the service of youth and adult leaders in your council made especially meaningful and significant differences in the lives of others. To be nominated for the National Hall of Leadership, the nominee must be a living Scout or Scouting volunteer who may/may not be officially registered with the BSA. They also must have served as an active Scout or Scouting volunteer within Scouting for at least one year. A nominee may be young or old — there is no age limit for nominees. Nominations will be submitted online in the form of a story and must be 450 words or less. Nominating period opens February 8, 2009 and closes February 8, 2010. Judging will then begin for the final inductees who will be announced at the BSA National Annual Meeting in Dallas in May 2010. Please incorporate the following logos into your flyers, websites, emails, and any other means by which electronic or print communication is employed to publicize Scouting events. These can currently be downloaded by right-clicking on the image and selecting "Save picture as..." or "copy". Please add them to your communications either as a banner at the end of the document or as the square pasted somewhere into the design of flyers, signs, pamphlets, et cetera... Celebration Activities and Engagement Opportunities

Our celebration activities and engagement opportunities around the BSA’s centennial celebration are designed to help achieve celebration outcomes in a partnership of council, district, and unit leaders.

In addition to increasing awareness, these activities focus on increasing membership, volunteerism, financial contributions, and engagement — all while reinforcing Scouting’s positive impact on the communities we serve.

BSA Alumni Connection (Aug. 2008– Dec. 2010)
The BSA Alumni Connection is a call to reconnect alumni with Scouting friends, mentors, and local councils across the country; rekindle enthusiasm for Scouting and the values it represents; and encourage them to re-engage with Scouting programs. With 50,000,000 living BSA alumni nationwide, this program has the potential to bring incredible value to Scouting at all levels of our council through renewed involvement of alumni.

National Hall of Leadership. (Feb. 2009 – Feb. 2010)
The 100th Anniversary National Hall of Leadership is a one-time opportunity to recognize extraordinary individuals for the differences they make though their leadership. Nominees must be living Scouts, Scouters, or volunteers. Inductees will be given national recognition to commemorate their leadership and dedication to living out Scouting virtues in service to others. A new awareness of how Scouting leadership impacts the communities we serve will result.

Generations Connection (Apr. 2009 – Dec. 2010)
The Generations Connection program inspires families to explore the value of Scouting in the family and identify it as something to be shared and passed through generations. Through a partnership with Arbor Day Foundation, BSA 100th Anniversary trees will be designated for families and communities to plant and nurture together, for generations to come. We will also encourage families to make Scouting their generational legacy , to retain and grow membership throughout our council.

A Year of Celebration, A Century of Making a Difference (Sept. 2009 – Dec. 2010)
Individuals including Scouts, volunteer leadership, and Scouting alumni can earn patches by demonstrating involvement in five of Scouting’s core values — leadership, achievement, community service, character, and the outdoors. This program will demonstrate how Scouting impacts our communities and raise awareness of the values we teach.

Touring Experiential Lodge (Jan. - Aug. 2010)
The BSA 100th Anniversary tour will travel the country to rally people of all ages to join the BSA in “Celebrating the Adventure, Continuing the Journey.” Through interactive experiences, demonstrations, activities, and more, visitors will have an exciting and inspiring view of the history and future of the Boy Scouts of America.

A Pitch for Scouting (Spring – Fall 2010)
In partnership with professional baseball, “A Pitch for Scouting” will reach baseball enthusiasts across the country. From the first pitch to the seventh inning stretch and everywhere in-between, Scouts will be on the field and involved in the game. In addition to being a lot of fun, this engagement will provide a national platform on which to promote Scouting.

Get in the Game (Aug 2009 – Dec. 2010)
Our Scouts and leaders will participate in a national, Scout-led 100th Anniversary geo-caching recruitment program. The popular outdoor treasure-hunting game will showcase how Scouts use Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers and other orienteering techniques. Each “treasure,” or cache, will include information about the value of Scouting and a clue about how to find the next site. Specific programming can be customized locally.

A Shining Light Across America (Aug. 2010)
During one evening of the National Jamboree, a webcast will connect millions of Scouts in communities across the country and around the world — bringing together the entire Scouting family for a single, nationwide opportunity to celebrate and reflect. Local council participation at select locations will also be captured and beamed back to the Jamboree.

100 Merit Badges for the 100th Anniversary (Mar. - Dec. 2010)
Gamehaven Council will offer a special program of expanded opportunities for earning merit badges throughout 2010, 100 merit badges in total.

100 Hours of Service (Feb. - Dec. 2010)
To kickoff the 100th Anniversary celebration in Gamehaven Council, Scouting units will form teams of Youth who will complete Anniversary service projects in which the units offer at least 100 Scout-hours per unit.

Our 100th Anniversary Celebration plan has been developed to be a true partnership between the national council and local councils, districts, and units. Together, we can achieve meaningful outcomes.

To assure this is a great partnership experience, our council celebration plan is built, and will be implemented, on the following principles:

1. High quality vs. high quantity: In addition to using the elements of the national celebration plan, our council plan includes only a few carefully selected high quality celebration activities.

2. More than a hand-off … a hand-up!: Our celebration activities have been developed, and will be delivered, as a helping hand up for district and units in achieving their goals.

3. Motivational rather than a mandate: We have selected and developed activities thatare so compelling people will want to participate.

4. Simple and doable: We have easy to use plans and materials to achieve our celebration outcomes.

5. Leverages current programming: Celebration activities are designed to fit into things we are already doing.

6. Recognizes good work and leadership: Our celebration engagement programs includes thanks and recognition to organizers and participants.

7. Communicated broadly through the ranks: Our simple, but comprehensive, communication plan is targeted to reach each of our audiences with the messages and information they need.

Our goal is to deliver a purpose-driven celebration … a sustained and coordinated effort that will allow us to share our powerful story in every community we serve.

Without question, this will include events around which we will gather to celebrate our important milestone. But, so too will this include an assertive and thoughtful effort to better communicate the tremendous value of Scouting in Gamehaven Council while engaging Scouts, leaders, alumni, family, friends, and the public throughout the entire council.

A purpose-driven celebration includes activities that are fun and inspiring — but also deliver meaningful results that help strengthen Scouting. With this as our celebration vision, we can conclude 2010 with more youth involved, more adults serving as volunteers, more financial supporters, and more positive impressions of Scouting throughout our communities.

Celebration Objectives
To achieve the fun, inspiration, and meaningful results of a purpose-driven celebration our council plan has been developed and targeted to achieve these five outcomes:

1. Continue to position Scouting as critical to the quality of life in every community we serve.
